Kris, Jon and I had a blast at Critical Mass last night. We began at Justin Herman Plaza, passed the angry suits in the Financial District, cruised by confused tourists in Union Square, played frogger with the homeless in the Tenderloin, listened to mariachi music in the Mission, climbed a small hill in Bernal Heights, saw the yards of school buses and FedEx trucks in the Bayview, shifted past the concrete and construction of Mission Bay and caught a glimpse of the Giants game.
The routes are different each month and it becomes a game of follow the leader.
We covered about 20 miles and it was a great way to see the city. At one point, I hit 29 mph going downhill. It was both exhilarating and scary.
There were a bunch of frustrated drivers and we saw a couple of confrontations. Some guy had apparently tried to run over a cork, a bicyclist who stands in front of a car to allow the mass to stay together and prevent the car from disrupting the flow. Other than that, it was pretty low key. There were moments riding down San Jose Avenue that were very quiet, almost peaceful, the humming of wheels in sync. I'm looking forward to next month's ride.
Point Reyes National Seashore offers miles of trails to hike, all within an hour's drive north of San Francisco. But as a protected wildlife sanctuary, dogs are pretty much prohibited, save for
three beaches and a trail or two. We hiked one this weekend, the Bolinas Ridge Trail, which is located right outside the park near the town of Olema. It's an easy 4-miles that meanders past grazing cows, rolling hills and offers a view of the Point Reyes peninsula and Drakes Bay in the distance.
Dear LazyWeb,
Inspired after talking to Alaina, Kimberly and Krissy, I've signed up for my first 5k run. I'm not much of a runner and now I need to get a good pair of running shoes.
Preferably, I'd like to avoid the chain sporting good stores for shoe advice; I want knowledgable advice and selection. Where can I go in San Francisco to find what my feet desires?
Thx!
